Why you need to know YOUR states helmet laws!
The first thing you need to purchase either before or at the same time as your new motorcycle is a helmet. Helmet laws vary from state to state, so check out the laws in your state before you make the wrong decision.
Should you wear a helmet? What kind? Should it be D.O.T. (Department of Transportation) approved? In our opinion, YES, you should wear a helmet and it should be DOT approved. The kind of helmet is up to you.
When you choose to wear a DOT approved motorcycle helmet, you are making the conscious decision to protect your head and very likely save your life. There are a wide variety of opinions when it comes to wearing a helmet while riding your motorcycle. Many feel their civil rights and liberties are being violated by being forced to wear a helmet. Those that feel this way, say that they should be able to make the decision and therefore take the consequences. There are those that will violate their states laws by either not wearing a helmet or putting a DOT sticker on a NOVELTY helmet. A novelty helmet is NOT going to protect your head in the event of a motorcycle crash or accident, but many like to wear a novelty helmet because it is light weight and cooler in the summertime.
If you violate your states laws with regards to wearing a D.O.T. approved helmet, you do so at your own risk. There are many consequences to violating the law. You may have to pay a large fine, you may have your motorcycle license revoked, etc. Not to mention that you may also end up killing yourself or be brain damaged or paralyzed for life. I, myself always wear my DOT approved helmet. In fact after watching my nephew get into a crash with a shorty DOT helmet, I traded in my own shorty DOT helmet for a FULL FACE DOT helmet. My nephew cut and bruised his face pretty badly. Had he been wearing a full face helmet, he would have had much less pain and scarring. Just my two cents, you have to make your own decision. Ride Safe! Wear your DOT approved helmet.
